The electric option

An 'off the shelf'  battery driven electric motor is an  alternative to the petrol motor. Widely available.

A simple but effective set-up.

The drive train. The design has this safely tucked away from small fingers.

The compost bins become...

The bodywork. We recommend clean, new, and empty ones.

The Atco Children's car.

The inspiration. This was designed in the 1930's by ATCO motor mowers and sold as the ATCO Safety car to teach children to drive.

The water butt becomes

Mudguards

Electric and petrol options information

Additional Information

To clarify, the petrol engine has both pull start and electric start, hence the pull handle in the picture.. A reserve option for a flattened battery!

The Electric motor voltage is not critical. In fact if the customer has satisfied themselves with the power output then the 12, 24, 36 and 48 volt motors will make use of a smaller battery pack (eg 2 x 12v batteries rather than 3 on a 36v motor) making them easier to separate and reposition around the car.

Any one considering the electric option should take advice from a supplier regarding the intended use unless they are buying secondhand and confident to experiment with different voltages and gear ratios. A DC motor will normally  run on whatever voltage you give it, so one way to govern a 36v motor apart from the speed control and throttle stop, is to give it less volts. Say run a 36v motor on 24v for a third less speed and less torque.

Of course you shouldn't put in more than the motor can handle, (like 24 volts across a 12 volt motor) as that would burn it out. Have a look at the motors and drive systems at https://orangeimports.co.uk/collections/spare-parts/eko-safety-racer-lighting-cars
